Filter balances can analyze the mass of fine particulate matter (PM) samples collected on filters. Filter weighing is typically performed by using individual filters (46.2 mm in diameter) weighed on an electronic micro-balance before and after field sampling. Particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter is collected from ambient air on one of these filters. The sampling duration is 24-hours. The net difference between pre- and post sampling filter weights is used to calculate the ambient air mass concentration. After post weighing, filters are stored.
